Benefits to Nonprofits

Capacity building helps nonprofits operate both more effectively (having the desired results) and more efficiently (ensuring the highest level of service for the dollars expended). Common areas of nonprofit organizational capacity include:
  • Fundraising planning and fiscal management to marshal adequate resources;
  • Board development to build a strong governance structure;
  • Strategic planning to develop an obtainable vision of the future;
  • Human resource management necessary to attract and retain qualified employees;
  • Compliance with legal and tax requirements to ensure that an organization's nonprofit status is maintained.

For example, a nonprofit might consider initiating capacity-building activities if it finds itself in one of the following situations:

  • A human service organization is confronted with a significant increase in need or program costs and must build its fundraising efforts to meet this challenge.
  • There is an opportunity to develop a new arts program and facility, and the organization recognizes that it will have to significantly increase its staffing, but lacks a plan or resources to do this.
  • A program for youth has been serving its community for many years but believes it can be more effective and efficient in its board governance and management practices. It needs to explore the possibilities and determine the best ways to do this.
  • In a small community there is competition for experienced board members and staff. A recreation organization wants to position itself to attract the best possible board members, and the most skilled and talented staff.
  • A local humane society needs to significantly expand its fund development activities beyond their newsletter and decides to develop a forward-thinking strategic plan to be more attractive to foundations and donors.
